Digital Faqs By Michael J. McNamara Q: For maximum image quality, should I
use the uncompressed TIFF mode on my digital camera instead of using the best
JPEG compression setting? It's a real pain using the camera in uncompressed TIFF
mode, since it takes forever to store each image and my memory card fills up in
the wink of an eye. But I want to make the best prints I can from my files.
Also, I've heard that resaving an image over and over again on the computer in
JPEG mode degrades the image quality with each progressive save. Is this true,
and if so, what's the best format for storing images after I upload them to my
computer?
A: More and more digital cameras
are including an uncompressed TIFF or RAW storage mode setting these days along
with a variety of JPEG compression choices. But for 98-percent of your shooting
needs, there's no reason to use uncompressed TIFF and RAW storage modes, since
they merely increase the time and space it takes to store images without
significantly increasing image quality. Your best bet is to use the
highest-quality JPEG compression setting combined with the maximum resolution
setting. This setting reduces the file size to approximately a quarter of its
uncompressed size and dramatically reduces storage time and burst rates. In
tests that we have performed on a variety of cameras, prints made from images
taken with the highest-quality JPEG setting are virtually indistinguishable from
prints made using the uncompressed TIFF or RAW modes.

Fashion Models - RAM IS A COMPUTER'S BEST FRIEND
RAM
it home!Nothing improves the speed of a
computer more than adding enough RAM memory to handle large photo files. And
RAM is cheap!
Q: I recently purchased a
4.1-megapixel camera and I'm amazed at the print quality of enlargements.
However, the larger files produced by my camera files (around 12 megabytes
uncompressed) are really bogging down my imaging program. It now takes much
longer to open images, sharpen them, and perform a variety of other corrections.
My computer was state-of-the-art only two years ago and I can't believe its
obsolete already! Do I have to get a new computer to speed things up or get a
more expensive image-retouching program?
A: Don't do either just yet. It
sounds like a quick RAM (random access memory) upgrade might be just what the
doctor ordered. If your computer was "state-of-the-art" only two years ago, it
should be powerful enough to open and scream through a 4.1-megapixel file in an
instant. But in order for the system's CPU to perform at its peak, you need
plenty of RAM. Most new computers ship with 128MB (or more) of RAM as standard,
but a two-year-old machine might have shipped with as little as 32MB. Adding
another 128MB to that system could double the speed of nearly every program you
run. The great news is that RAM memory prices have fallen to rock bottom levels
due to supply vastly outpacing demand. For example, the price of 128MB RAM chips
have fallen from over $500 to under $50 in the last two years, and it's now even
possible to get 500MB chips for around $150.
